During the introduction of Symphony Math’s latest version, an analysis was conducted that examined students’ time in the Instructional program and their growth in the independent Benchmarker assessment. The following graph summarizes the comparison, which showed dramatic student growth for students who used our instructional program for more than 5 hours during the first half of the 2014-15 school year:
The simple metric of 5 hours of use (regular use for at least a portion of the fall and winter) correlated to tremendous growth when compared to no or low use of Symphony Math. No other factors were introduced to constrain our analysis. In fact, in our sample of more than 30,000 students, those who used Symphony Math regularly made more than 8 times the growth compared to those with no or low use.
Symphony Math does not ‘teach to the test.’ Our Screener/Benchmarker assessment is completely independent from our instructional program. This means that students’ work in Symphony Math transferred to their success on math test items outside the instructional program’s environment.
Because of the nature of percentiles in upper grades, where scores and percentiles are more compressed, gains in ALL grades correlated to almost 4 months growth above expectations. Put another way, the average 2nd grade student who was 6 months below grade level at the beginning of the school year nearly closed the entire gap with his peers if he used Symphony Math for more than 5 hours.
